All eyes were on Jeff Fultz during Rattler weekend at South Alabama Speedway. Just one week before, Fultz took the victory in one of the biggest early-season Super Late Model races, the Early Bird at Birmingham International Raceway.
That meant the entire Super Late Model world was gunning for him at The Rattler on Sunday. He fended most of them off throughout the race, running up front for a time after starting 16th, but mechanical issues inside his #54 racecar of car owner Curtis Venable kept him from finishing where he was running. Fultz finished 16th.
“The car was pretty good,” said Fultz. “We got into a few little things there and the dang hood started coming up in my face. It was getting worse and worse and finally I just decided that I would start letting people go when they got to me. We were going to come in and fix it and they had a couple of quick cautions there where we didn’t get a chance to come in.
“Then, coming off of one of the restarts, something just started going wrong with the car. It sounded like the battery was going bad. I don’t know exactly what happened, but we just had to pull it in and park it.”
Now Fultz looks to regain his momentum in the first USAR Hooters Pro Cup South Division race of the season this Saturday at USA International Speedway in Lakeland, FL. But even he knows how good it could have felt going into Lakeland knowing he had two big Super Late Model wins in a row.
“The car was fast all weekend long. We just need to be a little bit more on top of our game. I think we had a car that could have competed for the win. I guess we’ll just never know right now. it would have been nice to back up that win from last week though.”
