For someone that was not even supposed to be driving a Super Late Model during the All American 400 weekend at Music City Motorplex in Nashville, TN, Jeff Fultz sure turned a few heads. Fultz jumped behind the wheel of a team car to Clay Jones during Friday’s practice session. After some dialing in, Fultz got the car to be one of the fastest in Nashville and at just the right time.
Fultz did not time into the field for the CRA Super Series 200-lap feature on Sunday, but in the last-chance qualifying event Saturday night, Fultz blasted his way through the field and wound up finishing second, earning him a starting spot in Sunday’s feature. The car’s speed that was gained throughout the weekend came to a halt when a mechanical problem developed early in Sunday’s race.
“Something broke in the motor,” said Fultz. “The motor was real good all weekend and so was the car. We just kinda rode around for a while and waited for guys to start getting single file, then we started picking them off. Then we started having a little motor problem. It was still fun to come out here and moonlight a little bit. Curtis (team owner) has some great cars, great guys and great motors. Heck, it may have not even been a motor problem, it could have been electrical too. It was just popping real bad. It was still under power, but it was popping.
“I hate it because the car was good. It was good last night and it was even better tonight actually. It was still fun to come out here and run good here at Nashville. I’ve never been that good here, so it was fun to have a good car like I had today. I look forward to coming out to do this again and we’ll do a lot better.”
